The Cloudflare Cuts

Cloudflare held Agents Week from April 28 to May 2. The centerpiece announcement: AI agents can now create Cloudflare accounts, start paid subscriptions, register domains, obtain API tokens, and deploy code to production. No human required.¹ One week later, on May 7, Cloudflare announced it is cutting over 1,100 employees, roughly 20% of its workforce.²

Same company. Seven days apart.

The Receipts

April 30, 2026. Cloudflare publishes "Agents can now create Cloudflare accounts, buy domains, and deploy." The blog post explains that AI coding agents can provision accounts, purchase domains via Stripe, and ship applications to production end-to-end. The post notes that "humans can be in the loop to grant permission" but emphasizes there is "no need to go to the dashboard, copy and paste API tokens, or enter credit card details." The announcement hit 635 points on Hacker News.¹

May 7, 2026. Cloudflare reports Q1 2026 earnings. Revenue up 34% year-over-year to $639.8 million. The same filing announces 20% of the workforce will be cut as part of a transition to an "agentic AI-first operating model." Internal AI usage surged more than 600% in the prior three months. Employees across engineering, HR, finance, and marketing were running thousands of AI agent sessions per day. Severance costs: $140-150 million. Stock dropped 18% in after-hours trading.²³

That is the sequence. Build the agent infrastructure. Announce agents can do the work. Cut the humans who used to do the work. Report record revenue.

The Pattern

This is not the first time. Freshworks CEO Dennis Woodside said "over half of our code is written by AI" on May 6 while cutting 500 employees, with revenue up 16%.⁴ Coinbase cut 14% the same week, creating "AI-native pods" that could be one-person teams directing agents.⁵ Block's Jack Dorsey cut 40% of his workforce in February, posting that "100 people + AI = 1,000 people."⁶

The pattern is consistent: revenue rises, headcount drops, and the CEO names AI as the reason. The layoff tracker now reads 113,863 tech workers cut in 2026.⁷

What makes Cloudflare different is the timing. Most companies announce AI capabilities and layoffs months apart, leaving plausible deniability. Cloudflare did it in seven days. Agents Week was the product launch. The earnings call was the workforce consequence. The press releases are a week apart and they read like cause and effect.

What They Said

Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince called it "not an easy decision." The company is offering departing employees their full base pay through the end of 2026, continued healthcare for U.S. employees, and vested equity through August 15.³ The severance is generous by industry standards.

But the framing is the tell. Cloudflare described the restructuring as a move toward an "agentic AI-first operating model." Not a cost reduction. Not a performance-based cut. An operating model change. The agents are the model. The humans were the old model.

Internal AI usage up 600%. Workforce down 20%. Revenue up 34%. The math is legible.

They can be in the loop. They don't have to be. And 1,100 of them won't be.
