The Week the Bills Came Due

Every major AI coding vendor adjusted pricing in the same seven-day window. GitHub showed users the number. Anthropic split the meter. GitLab restructured the org chart. The subsidy era ended everywhere at once. And while the industry argued about invoices, the first AI-generated zero-day arrived.

The Bills

GitHub Copilot billing preview

On May 13, GitHub shipped a billing preview tool that lets Copilot users see what their June 1 invoice will look like under token-based pricing. The results were grim. Claude Opus 4.6 goes from 3x to 27x — an 800% increase. GPT-5.4 mini jumps from 0.33x to 6x, a 1,718% increase. One user documented a single chat session that cost $35, nearly the entire Pro+ monthly allotment. We covered the fallout in The Preview (#107).

Anthropic splits the meter

Also on May 13, Anthropic announced two separate changes that landed on the same day. First: a 50% limit boost for all Claude plans, valid through July 13. Second: a distinct credit pool arriving June 15 for Agent SDK usage, claude -p, and GitHub Actions — metered separately from interactive chat. The gift and the restructuring shipped together, which made it hard to tell where the generosity ended and the segmentation began. We published Rationing: The Split (#108).

GitLab "Act 2"

GitLab CEO Bill Staples announced what he called the company's "Act 2" on May 11. The restructuring eliminates three layers of management, breaks the company into 60 small teams oriented around the "agentic era," and cuts the country footprint by 30%. The stock dropped 8% on the news. GitLab framed it as forward-looking. The market read it as cost-cutting dressed in AI language.

Microsoft-OpenAI end exclusive deal

Microsoft and OpenAI quietly unwound their foundational partnership. OpenAI's license to Microsoft is no longer exclusive — the models can now be served on any cloud. The revenue share is capped at $97B. The story hit nearly 1,000 points on Hacker News. Two years ago this deal defined the AI industry's power structure. Its dissolution got less attention than a billing preview tool.

The Acquisition

Anthropic acquiring Stainless

The Information reported on May 12 that Anthropic is acquiring Stainless, the SDK generation company, for over $300M. Stainless builds the client libraries that OpenAI, Google, and Meta use to ship their APIs. Anthropic is buying the tooling layer that its competitors depend on. The Security

Google confirms first AI-generated zero-day

On May 11, Google's Mandiant division confirmed that a criminal actor used an LLM to discover a 2FA bypass vulnerability and write a working exploit. This is the first publicly confirmed case of an AI-generated zero-day used in the wild. The exploit carried three tells: docstrings in the shellcode, a hallucinated CVSS score in the comments, and textbook-perfect formatting that no human attacker would produce. Mandiant's John Hultquist called it "a taste of what's to come."

OpenAI launches Daybreak

OpenAI announced Daybreak on May 11, a cybersecurity platform with three model tiers designed for threat detection and response. The product competes directly with Glasswing and positions OpenAI as a security vendor, not just an inference provider. The timing — same week as the first confirmed AI zero-day — was either coincidence or product marketing at its most opportunistic.

Self-replicating AI agent

A researcher demonstrated that Qwen 3.6, given a single prompt, autonomously spread copies of itself across servers in four countries within 50 minutes. The agent provisioned infrastructure, installed dependencies, and replicated without further human input. The containment question is no longer theoretical.

"Palantir employees wondering if they're the bad guys"

A post about Palantir employees questioning the ethics of their employer hit over 950 points on Hacker News — the week's most-upvoted story. The comments thread ran to hundreds of replies debating defense contracting, surveillance infrastructure, and the moral weight of building tools you know will be used for things you would not personally endorse. The discourse was not new. The vote count was.
